Cenote Sac Antun

Cenotes Sac Actun

Cenote Sac Actun is one of the most extraordinary natural wonders near Tulum, celebrated for its vast underwater cave system, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking geological formations. Known in Maya as “White Cave”, and sometimes referred to as Cenote Pet Cemetery, this cenote offers a truly magical experience for those who love exploring the hidden beauty of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Located about 120 km south of Cancun and just a short drive from Tulum, Sac Actun is officially recognized as the longest underwater cave system in the world, stretching more than 215 miles (346 km). Its calm, shallow waters remain mildly warm year-round, making it an ideal location for snorkeling. Sunlight filtering through openings highlights spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and shimmering rock formations.

Sac Actun is also of great archaeological significance. Researchers have discovered ancient Mayan pottery and fossilized remains of animals such as jaguars, pumas, and even mammoths deep within its caverns. Certain areas containing these findings can only be visited with a certified guide to ensure preservation and safety.

Reaching Cenote Sac Actun is easy—travelers can rent a car, take a taxi, or join one of the many guided tours available from Tulum or Playa del Carmen. It sits just a short distance from the famous Cenote Dos Ojos, and in 2018 researchers confirmed that both cenotes are part of the same immense cave system.

Whether you’re interested in nature, history, snorkeling, or simply exploring one of the region’s most iconic geological sites, Cenote Sac Actun promises an unforgettable adventure beneath the surface.
