Cenote Angelita is one of the most extraordinary diving locations in the Riviera Maya, offering a mysterious and otherworldly underwater experience. At first glance, Cenote Angelita looks like a simple pond hidden deep within the jungle, but beneath the surface lies a dramatic vertical dive unlike any other in the region. Unlike many cenotes with tunnels and passageways, Angelita is a straight descent—reaching depths of up to 60 meters (200 feet)—making it an ideal site for advanced and experienced divers.
What truly sets Cenote Angelita apart is its fascinating water composition. The upper layer consists of crystal-clear freshwater extending down to about 100 meters, while the deeper section contains dense saltwater. Between these two layers is a surreal cloud of hydrogen sulfide that forms a thick, mist-like blanket. From above, this layer looks like a mysterious white fog, and from below, it creates a dramatic shift in color, making divers feel as though they are descending into a dreamlike world.
Located just 16 kilometers south of Tulum, Cenote Angelita is relatively easy to access. After parking near the main road, a short five-minute walk through the jungle leads you directly to this natural wonder. Facilities are limited, so visitors are encouraged to bring snacks or water if they plan to stay longer.

The Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its underwater cave system with over 6,000 cenotes. I had the opportunity to complete an important milestone in my diving career, and the famous Cenote Angelita was one of the sites I visited. It was a multi-level diving experience. The first half of the dive was stunning; under the sunlight, it felt like stepping into a scene from a science fiction movie. Diving further down to about 27 meters, the entire underwater world became incredibly clear, as if I had truly traveled to another world. At this depth, I also witnessed the famous "underwater cloud sea" created by the stratification of freshwater and saltwater (a white layer of hydrogen sulfide). The bald islet and fallen leaves in the middle further accentuate the breathtaking view of the sea of clouds from the high mountains. Finally, we passed through a cave and returned to the surface, perfectly concluding this special sinkhole cave diving experience.
