You have to enjoy the touristy beach atmosphere and not be put off by the enormous cruise ships, veritable floating cities on the water, which regularly disgorge their streams of tourists. It's still a pleasant place to spend a day, though.

Beautiful beach in Costa Maya with crystal clear water. Lots of shops and eateries nearby. Can get a bit busy when the cruise ships arrive, but still worth a visit.

We visited Mahahual in early December, unfortunately coinciding with the arrival of the cruise ship. The town is small, with many public deficiencies: unpaved streets, huge potholes, trash at the lighthouse and surrounding area, and still some sargassum seaweed. The service providers are very pushy and try to sell you the most expensive dish (stuffed fish), they're not helpful at all, they mislead you by saying the palapa has a minimum consumption requirement and then that you must order a dish and a drink per person. They serve you reluctantly, and at the end of the bill, they practically force you to add a 15% tip. The beach has murky water and trash. Based on my experience, I don't recommend it.
