Playa Virgen Beach is a serene and charming destination, perfect for those looking to relax and unwind along the Riviera Maya. The beach gets its name from a small statue of the Virgin Mary that was discovered on its shores many years ago, adding a touch of history and local significance to its natural beauty.

With soft sand and calm, clear waters, Playa Virgen is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, or simply enjoying a peaceful day by the sea. Unlike the more crowded beaches in the region, it offers a quiet and laid-back atmosphere, making it a favorite spot for visitors seeking tranquility.

While there are not many full-service restaurants nearby, Playa Virgen is home to several beach bars and small cafes where visitors can savor delicious Mexican cuisine and refreshing drinks. These casual dining options enhance the relaxed beach experience, allowing guests to enjoy local flavors without leaving the sand.

Whether you’re looking to escape the crowds, take a swim in calm waters, or enjoy a quiet meal by the sea, Playa Virgen Beach provides a perfect combination of natural beauty, history, and laid-back charm for travelers in the Riviera Maya.

Perhaps one of the best beaches near Playa del Carmen. The sand is wide, with good facilities at the Maroma beach club. Ideal for families with children. In the off-season, prices for locals are very attractive.

Playa Virgen is located in the Caribbean Sea, in the state of Quintana Roo. It is about 1.7 km from Punta Maroma. The sandy strip of Playa Virgen stretches nearly 4 kilometers long. It’s popular with people who like tranquility, relaxation, paddleboarding, kayaking. Warm temperatures year-round: the warmest air temps are around 31.2 °C (in August) and water up to about 29.9 °C. The coolest month is January, with air temps down to about 25.7 °C, and water around 26.9 °C. The beach is managed by Maroma Adventures. In recent years, Punta Maroma / Maroma Beach has been recognized in Mexico as one of the most beautiful beaches (e.g. by Mexico Desconocido) in contests like Tianguis Turístico. We came from Playa del Carmen via shuttle. The snorkeling was enjoyable, and there were some nice corals, though not nearly as impressive as what we’ve seen in Zanzibar. The staff asked us to fill in the happiness box at the end of the tour. At the beach there were a few downsides — there isn’t enough shade, and the music was extremely loud, which made it hard to relax. The day pass costs $120USD per person, which includes a beach chair — no umbrella, so on busy days you’ll have to compete for shade. The beach itself is beautiful, but not more beautiful than the one at our resort. The swimming experience, however, was far less enjoyable than in Playa del Carmen — the water here is too shallow and not as clean.

It's pretty, but the beach cleaning was kicking up so much sand that the wind blew into your face all day
